WHO IS CO CHARLOTTE

Our Story:

Campus Outreach Charlotte (COC) began in the fall of 1995. With God’s help a team of eight staff and a simple vision of “Glorifying God by Building Laborers on the Campus for the Lost World” we set out to establish an evangelistic multiplying discipleship ministry on select campuses in the state of North Carolina. Initially COC began at UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Greensboro. Since that time we have also added Elon University, Wingate University, and Davidson College. As a result of God’s abundant blessing the COC team has experienced an exceptional level of growth and the number of staff and breadth of influence on college student’s lives continues to grow day by day. Today 16 COC staff serve Christ on college campuses in North Carolina with a heart to make a lasting change in the lives of this generation of college students.

In the spring of 2001, in response to the fruitfulness of the COC ministry, COC announced plans to launch a new Campus Outreach region, Campus Outreach Johannesburg (COJ). A staff team came together from existing CO-Charlotte staff and graduating student leaders to form the pioneering CO-Johannesburg staff team. The Lord quickly provided the necessary financial support for this team and in February 2002 the initial team moved to Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa. Today this team has grown to include 24 staff (9 of which are native South Africans) and ministers to literally thousands of students on Witwatersrand University, University of Johannesburg, and the University of Pretoria. The hope of this effort is to establish collegiate ministries similar to this in cities all over the country of South Africa and eventually throughout the continent of Africa.

In 2004, it became obvious that the Lord was again multiplying the ministry of Campus Outreach Charlotte rapidly and the vision to establish a third regional ministry took shape. We began praying and asking the Lord where we should consider establishing this new ministry. After considerable counsel, prayer, and investigation it became clear that God was leading us to the state of Virginia. As a result of God’s calling a staff team of 8 came together from existing CO-Charlotte staff and graduating student leaders to form the Campus Outreach Lynchburg (COL) team. After a year of preparations, training, and support raising the staff team permanently moved to Lynchburg, VA in May 2005 to begin ministry on the campuses of Virginia Tech and Radford University. Recently, in the fall of 2010, Campus Outreach Charlotte again expanded to nation's capitol to form the Campus Outreach Washington DC (CODC) team. A staff team has been serving at Georgetown University and George Washington University under the authority of Capitol Hill Baptist Church.

Today COC continues to minister on campuses in North Carolina with the hope of reaching each succeeding generation of college students with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and discipling all who come to faith with the hope of seeing the grow into mature followers of Christ. COC finds inspiration in Acts 1:8, "…and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Our desire is to see this work continue to multiply and expand so please pray with us that COC will continue to be faithful to glorify God and fruitful in the mission He has called us to that He would be glorified in our “Jerusalem” (North Carolina), “Judea and Samaria (Virginia & DC) and “the ends of the earth” (South Africa).
